Elements are sorted by their atomic number, which increases as you move across or down the periodic table. This is because the mass is calculated by adding up the protons and neutrons in each element’s atom. The number of protons increases with each element, which means that as you move across the table, the weight goes up, as well. This also means you can determine a lot about an element’s weight based on where it is located on the periodic table.
